A Comparative Study of Random Waypoint and
Gauss-Markov Mobility · 2006
A mobile adhocnetwork (MANET)isanetwork consisting ofa setofwireless mobile nodesthatcommunicate witheachotherwithoutcentralized control or established infrastructure. The mobility modelrepresents themoving behavior ofeachmobile node(MN)intheMANET thatshould berealistic. Itisacrucial partintheperformance evaluation of MANET.RandomWaypoint mobility modelistheonlymobility modelthathasbeenwidely usedinthesimulation studyof MANET despite someunrealistic movementbehaviors suchas suddenstopandsharpturn.WhilstGauss-Markov mobility modelhasbeenprovedthatitcansolve bothofthese problems. Thispaperpresents acomparative simulation studyofRandom Waypointand Gauss-Markovmobility modelson the performance studyofMANET thatusesAd-hocOn-Demand Distance Vector(AODV)astherouting protocol. Theresults showthatbothmobility modelsarenotdifferent incaseeach MN ismovingathuman runningspeed. Therefore, itis suggested touseRandomWaypoint mobility modelbecause of itslesscomputational overhead comparing toGauss-Markov mobility model. When thespeedofMNs isashighasfast automobiles, theperformance result using RandomWaypoint mobility modelissignificant different fromGauss-Markov mobility model. Therefore, Gauss-Markov mobility model should beusedinstead. Moreover, different levels ofrandomness setting havenoeffect ontheaccuracy ofthroughput andend-to- enddelay.
