Scanning Our Past From the IEEE History Center
Alfred N. Goldsmith · 2002
The year 2002 marks the 90th anniversary of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) and of its flagship publication PROCEEDINGS OF THE IRE. Of course, the journal you hold in your hand has a slightly different title—PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE. The story of how the IEEE formed in 1963 from the merger of IRE with its older and more power-oriented sister society, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE), is a familiar one (and is recorded in detail at the IEEE History Center’s website1 ). That the IRE was itself the result of a merger of predecessor societies is less well known—but I am getting ahead of my story.
