DATA AUTHENTICATION OF SATELLITE IMAGERY USING SIFT

B. Prabhakar, Nikhil Prathapani · 2014

In the past three decades satellite imagery has been used successfully for weather, geographical and geological applications. With the advance of technology, more sophisticated sensors provide higher resolutions, and with faster computer systems, the use of satellite imagery has opened the fields of exploration and application. With the advent of latest technologies, data present over internet has been prone to various kinds of attacks. Satellite Imagery is not an exception for such attacks. It has caused a serious problem for the images available online, for example, images captured by RESOURCESAT, RISAT and CARTOSAT are available online and lack considerable fortification. The various attacks on the satellite imagery can be Intensity level variation, Sigma value alteration (change in scale) and Rotation or Affine transformations. Hence there is a requirement for a novel and robust method of image retrieval or authentication. In this paper, the authentication of image data is obtained through the application of Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) to the image data. The SIFT can be used to match key points and also to watermark a given image resulting in enhanced security. The paper confines to simulations of the data captured by RESOURCESAT-2 and are carried out using MATLAB tool.
