Inthis paper; wederive asimple methodfor estimating the International Roughness Index (IRI) ofapavement profile using data collected byacomputerized profilograph. Thealgorithm presented herein achieves this byestimating thestandard deviation ofthepoint- to-point slope ofthepavement fromtheprofilograph's recorded data andthenmapping this toanexpected IRIviaatheoretically justified equation whichwederive. Wedemonstrate theperformance ofthis approach vianumerical simulation andanalysis.
