Investigating the use of Elliptic Curve Cryptography in Transport Ticketing

In this work we investigate the use of an Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC)based Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in the transport ticketing environment. We propose use of ECC-based protocols within current ticketing systems, as well as within emerging EMVWave and Pay ticketing solutions, in an attempt to overcome potential system vulnerabilities and operational weaknesses. We present several ECC-based ticketing architectures, consider the ECC mechanisms put forward by EMVCo, and examine the feasibility of such proposals with regards to operational timing constraints.
