able regions in the world isThe Asian-Pacific countries (APC), whose economy is growing rapidly due to its high technical level and the diligence of its people. The features of the APC are high population density, a wide range of climates (from tropical to almost arctic), and different cultures, from Asian to European. High-quality telecommunication networks are required to support its rapid growth as well as its transportation networks. Wireless personal communications (WPC) play an important role in promoting the mobility of people living in the APC. A future (and present) characteristic of the lifestyle of the people in this region is to travel in the APC on business or as tourists, carrying their portable personal terminals with them. However, they will be disappointed at finding that they have to change them at the borders, if the countries in the APC adopt different personal communications standards from Europe, the United States, and Japan. This problem is typical, not only in the APC but also worldwide. The important issue in the APC, however, is lack of international cooperation on research and development (R&D) of WPC, which is unlike the situation in Europe. People in the APC should therefore discuss their regional features and demands themselves in order to establish the Asian-Pacific standard for WPC, which should be a step toward the global standard as an ultimate goal.
