ulti-Channel Linear Amplifier
Victoria Bennett · 1995
The demand for much greater flexibility in the frequency planning of radio networks has led to the development of a new base -stat ion transmitter architecture. A single highly linear multi -channe l amplifier could replace the conventional high-level combination of indi vidual ilmplifiprs usi ng selective cavities. Th is Ilew architecture all ows much greater flexibil ity in frequency planning them a cavity combiner, together with an increase in power efficiency over that of a hybrid combiner. However, c,ne power rating of this si ngle amplifier, which carries a complex signa l consisting of the sum of all the individual modulated carriers, must be carefully consid ered. For example, the peak en vel ope power of a t ransmitter carrying sixteen chan:lCls nt 10 Wntts ench could be as high as 2.56kW, The work presented in this paper complements an earlier analysis into the statistical behaviour of the enye lope of a multi-carrie, signal, by investigating the degree of distortion i ntroducp.(l by li miting the I1m1 Li-carrier envelupe , with a view to reducin g the peak ellvelope power.
