A procedure for benchmarking MAC protocols used in wireless sensor networks

John H. Corbett, G. Ruzzelli · 2006

SUMMARY The development of new MAC protocols to deal with emerging applications for infrastructure-free networks, such as wireless sensor networks, is currently impeded by the lack of a common benchmarking standard to determine the suitability of certain protocols to certain scenarios. There is a need to rectify this situation to facilitate the development of new MAC protocols by improving the quality of their evaluation. To achieve this goal, the current methods, scenarios and metrics used for evaluating MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks are surveyed, and a common application independent benchmark is formulated to assess the suitability of new and emerging protocols.
