What They Reveal and Conceal

Hoon Park, Richard Coyne, Dorian Wiszniewski · 2000

We examine the uses of prototypic devices in research and in design, focusing on a particular configuration of hardware and software for incorporating manual sketching into computer environments. We discuss the phenomenology of disclosure, attending to the revealing and concealing capabilities of such devices. We call on theories from pragmatism, surrealism and phenomenology as a supplement to existing approaches. We also apply what we learn about the particular device of our study to a consideration of design devices generally.
