GPS L1 Indoor Fading Characterization using Block Processing Techniques

S. Satyanarayana, Daniele Borio, Gérard Lachapelle · 2009

In this paper a procedure is developed for the characterization of the GPS L1 Coarse Acquisition (C/A) indoor propagation channel. More specifically, block processing techniques are used in assisted mode for determining the signal mean attenuation and fade statistics. Live GPS signals are collected in di erent indoor environments and the signal amplitude profile is extracted on the basis of Maximum Likelihood criteria. The amplitude fade distribution and statistics such as the Average Fade Duration (AFD) and Level Crossing Rates (LCR) are determined and analyzed as a function of the indoor environment. Distributions of the signal amplitudes are estimated using non-parametric kernel density estimators and compared against standard parametric distributions such as Rayleigh, Rice, Lognormal, and Gamma. The analysis confirms that fade statistics vary depending on the type of indoor environment considered.
