INTEGRATED SERVICES IN THE INTERNET The Intemet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is currently in the pro- cess of overhauling the architecture of the Intemet to meet new challenges and support new applications. One of the most im- portant components of that venture is the enhancement of the In- temet service model from a class-less best-effort service architec- ture to an integrated services architecture supporting a multitude of classes and types of services. In this paper we present an overview of the different services being defined and their intended target ap- plications. We also explore some of the challenges in designing In order to address the wide range of application service requirements, there are two distinct forms of services being defined in the IEZ. The first form is an end-to-end reserva- tion based service that uses the Resource Reservation Proto- col (RSVP) (4,16) to request an appropriate level of service for a session. Services of the second form, namely the Differentiated Services, are intended to provide service dis- crimination between broad classes of users.
