With expanding use of the Internet and progress in computer technology, the user environment for telecommunications is undergoing a major upheaval. Forms of telecommunications use in the activities of both businesses and individuals are becoming diverse and a transition is occurring from communication between individuals to communication between people and machines and between machine and machine. Today the Internet is growing, from a simple communications means, into one of society’s major infrastructures. In this paper, we will present an outline of the functions which will be demanded of future IP (Internet Protocol) networks which are exemplified by the Internet. We will relate those functions to the changes in demands on 21st century networks and will discuss the core technologies needed to realize those functions.
