Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS) is a high-speed, connectionless, wide area, public cell relay service. It is being offered by several Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) and is intended to interconnect Local Area Networks (LANs) utilizing the public data network. SMDS customers require the same ability to manage this public LAN interconnect as they would a private LAN interconnect. Specific management functions include network monitoring and data collection. SMDS Customer Network Management (CNM) will offer a network monitoring solution. In addition, CNM offers statistical capabilities which will be useful for ongoing network planning and support.
