A new approach for personal identification based on iris recognition is presented in this paper. The b ody of this paper details the steps of iris recognition, includ ing image preprocessing, feature extraction and cla ssifier design. The proposed algorithm uses a bank of Gabor filters to capture both local and global iris char acteristics to form a fixed length feature vector. Iris matchin g is based on the weighted Euclidean distance betwe en the two corresponding iris vectors and is therefore very fa st. Experimental results are reported to demonstrat e the performance of the algorithm.
