Over the last few years, a substantial number of call admission control (CAC) schemes have been proposed for ATM networks. In this article, we review the salient features of some of these algorithms. Also, we quantitatively compare the performance of three of these schemes.

he current infrastructure for public networking comprises two different realms: circuit-switched telephone networks and packet-switched data networks. The need for the integration of services resulted in the introduction of the narrowband integrated services digital network (N-ISDN) in the 1980s. The benefits of introducing N-ISDN included common user-network interfaces for a variety of services, improved signaling capabilities, and enhanced integrated services.
