Most fungi are completely resistant to the action of the antimicrobiol drugs. Only a ' few drugs have been discovered which exert an inhibitory effect on the fungi pathogenic for man, and most of these are relatively toxic l . The need for more and better antifungal agent s is becoming urgent because of the increasing detection of systematic myc~ses in patients suffering from debilitating diseases such as neoplasis and in persons on long-term total parenteral nutrition 2 . In view of the above, a variety of useful antifungal drugs have been developed in the last three decades. But, very few compounds have yet been found which combine th e prope rties required for the treatment of systematic yeast infections. Amphoteracin Band flucytosine are th e only two agents that have been approved for such use' . Consequently, search for novel , effective and less toxic antifungal drugs still continues.
