PREDICTING POWEX FACTOR AND OTHER INPUT P- FOR SWITCHING PO= SUPPLIES

Mark A. Geisler · 1990

When designing a switching power supply or implementing one into a product, it may be useful to predict the power factor, input current, and other input parameters, and determine the size of the ac service required. This is especially true when the rms input current approaches the maximum rating of the product in which the power supply resides. In this caw, a change in the power factor due to a variation in the source impedance for different ac sources may result in current flow exceeding the rating of the product for some installatiom, Other input parameters are also important for properly selecting components and to determine performance characteristics of the power supply such as peak input current, rms capacitor current, and capacitor ripple voltage. As presented here the appropriate model and computer algorithm make it possible to predict power factor, input current, and other electrical input parameters Theoretical and measured data are also provided for various power supplies demonstrating the practicality and accuracy of this computersimulation-based method for predicting these parameters
