Most of us have the need to examine changes, if any, between the many old and new data sets produced by an upgrade in an application. It’s easy to use Proc Compare, but labor is intensive for a person to read through multiple output pages. We outline an intelligent utility that has been developed to store Proc Compare outputs to a document, review the macro return code (SYSINFO) from Compare and then selectively replay with Proc Document only pages showing where differences are. This ad hoc utility reduces manual work and increases programmer productivity. It nicely illustrates how to use Proc Document for storage and retrieval, and how to decode the qualitative information contained in SYSINFO about comparison results.
