Telepresence Mobile Rob0 t for Security Applications

Robert J. Schultz, Ryoji Nakajima, Junji Nomura · 1991

A mobile telepresence robot is currently king developed for use surveillance and fredetection applications. This tele- presence system enhances functionalify over current systems by allowing the user to patrol and examine the remote area as if he were actually there. The user C;UI perfonn precision observation andpin point data collection without experiencing the hazardous of the remote environment. The viewing station contains a boom (binocular omni-orientation monitor)-mounted stereoscopic color viewer, while the robot consists of a self-powered mobile pladonn canying the slave telepresence camera system and various naviga- tional sensors. The robot patrols a pre-defined area and goes to a parhlar landmark autonomously in case of an emergency. Bene- fiLS of this system include intuitive user interaction and lucid presentations of the remote environment. This paper discusses the design. construction, and man-machine interface of the mobile telepresence robot.
