Thecomponents ofelectricity networks areageing. Itis expected that within ahorizon of15years, theperformance will deteriorate significantly, while thecosts foroperating the networks will increase enormously. Themainproblem isthat asignificant part ofthepopulation oftheassets isinstalled in thesameperiod, resulting inahighly concentrated number of failures inashort time. Thecurrently applied replacement strategy hastoberevisited, inorder toaccommodate the effects ofageing assets: higher maintenance costs, high failure rates, anda steep increase ofcapital expenditure (CAPEX). Methods like long-term simulation, multi-criteria decisionmakingunderuncertainty, critical assetidentification, condition assessment, andadvanced statistics forthe extrapolation ofcondition assessments ofrepresentative samples ofassets shouldbe applied. By usingthese methodologies ina smartandintegrated way, costs and
