Thispaperproposes amethodforassessing blurcaused bydefocus fromoneimage. Theessential ideaisto estimate thepoint spread function (PSF)fromtheline spread function (LSF), whereas theLSFisconstructed fromedgeinformation. Theprocedure includes edge detection andlocalization, pixelinterpolation, LSF determination andPSF extraction. Thisapproach is independent ofimagecontents, andthealgorithm hasfast speedasitworksinspatial domainwithout complex Fourier transform or iterative computation. The experimental results validate theproposed method. Itcan beusedforblind image quality evaluation invision-based applications.
