A NEW METHOD FOR DIGITALMULTITONINGUSINGGRAY LEVEL SEPARATION

J. BaccaRodrfguez, Gonzalo R. Arce, Daniel L. Lau · 2006

Theproblem ofmultitoning emerges astheresult ofadvances onprinting technology that allow thereproduction ofdifferent shades ofgrayapplying techniques like multiple inks, differentinkconcentration orvarious dotsizes. Theendresult isan improvement inthequality ofthereproduction. Whilesome algorithms usedforbinary halftoning havebeenextended to dealwithmultitoning withacertain success, there isroom forfurther improvement inthequality oftheresulting images. Faheem, Arce, andLauproposed graylevel separation asawaytoimprove thequality ofmultitone images generatedthrough error diffusion. Inthis paperanewgraylevel separation scheme isproposed whoseobjective istoensure that black, grayandwhite pixels areprinted inblue-noise patterns. Thenewscheme isapplied toerror diffusion aswell as tothewellknownDBSalgorithm. Theresults inbothcases showanimprovement inthetexture oftheprinted patterns.
