Energy aware quality of service in a flash based embedded storage system
Emil Mellfeldt · 2009
This thesis targets energy aware quality of service in a flash memory based embedded storage system. The main objectives are to make the storage system energy aware and to implement functionality to adapt the energy consumption depending on available resources. A buffer has been implemented to decrease the number of write and erase operations performed on the flash memory. Some of the flash memory operations are directed to a volatile RAM memory. The introduction of a buffer has decreased the energy consumption between 25 % and 70 % depending on how data is accessed. The time consumption has been decreased between 55 % and 80 % in the test cases where each data block is accessed several times. A test case simulating streaming media showed a marginal decrease in performance compared to a storage system without buffer. The introduction of a buffer in a flash based storage system can reduce both the time and energy consumption. The downside is that the fault tolerance of crash safe storage systems can be decreased.
