WiFighter: Improving Access Point Selection Under Linux

David Barrera · 2008

The widespread availability of wireless networking equipment has made 802.11 networks ubiquitous in highly populated areas. Users are increasingly demanding wireless connectivity on the go, and while they are able to detect many wireless networks around them, selecting the best one is not always an easy task. This paper presents WiFighter, a Linux-based tool for automatically selecting an 802.11 access point based on several metrics. WiFighter is based on the Virgil algorithm, which claims to have 22% to 100% more success than the standard algorithms in connecting to a usable access point.
