A highspeed FPGAoff-loading engine fordetecting thelicense plate itself inorder toavoid thetraffic accident isproposed. A complicated algorithm iswritten inHandel-C, andparallel processing isexplicitly utilized inevery level ofimplementation; aninput imageissegmented into16areas, andeachareais processed inparallel byamultiple calculation unitexecuting pipeline processing andadistributed memorymodule. A prototype circuit implemented onageneral purpose FPGAboard achieved 4.16 times performance assoftware execution onaPentiumIIIdesktop PC.Thehighest performance inliterature; 100frames persecond; canbeachieved.
