This paperdescribes a new signal processing LSI configurationand its advantages with respect to speech communications subscriber circuits on an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. The ATM network approach is being studied in earnest, and is considered to be the most likelycandidate for broadband ISDN systems [l]. We have developed a Voice Packet Coder which combines the silence span compressioWexpansion function and the cell loss compensation function into a single group of three LSI chips which are capable of processing media for both PCM and ADPCM environments. This LSI configuration serves to provide effective speech communication capabilities in an ATM network environment. Thenear-endechocancellerwas implementedwithasingle speech processing LSI, and serves to absorb delays in voice packeting, as well as to absorb the influence of cell propagation delays. We have developed and evaluated a signal processing LSI configuration for speech communication on an ATM network for the first time.
