ISPRS ON THE INTERNET - PRESENCE AND PROSPECTS

André Streilein · 2000

The Internet has great potential for the exchange and dissemination of data, software, information and expertise not only in the field of photogrammetry and remote sensing. The Internet, which is simply an international network consisting of individual computers and computer networks that are all interconnected by many paths, is becoming the repository of all we have accomplished as a society. It invites and facilitates multiple points of view and dialog in ways not feasible by the traditional, one-way, mass media. This paper deals with the Internet from three different points of view. First a general overview over the Internet and its different services, the relation between Internet and the World Wide Web, the growth and the usage of the Internet and general strategies in order to find information on the Internet are presented. Then it is described how the ISPRS is presented on the Internet and what initiatives are taken to develop this presentation. And finally an outlook to the future of this medium is sketched. However, it should mentioned that beside any technological development, which will or might come in the future, the main sources for the Internet are we, the people who are using the Internet and who are contributing to it.
