PROC FORMAT, because of its name, is most often used to change the appearance of data for presentation. But PROC FORMAT can be used for much more than the cosmetic transformation of data. It can be a tool for redefining data, recoding data, transforming da ta for tabulation and reporting, subsetting large data files and more. This paper will present a few applications of PROC FORMAT that go beyond the basic display of data and show that PROC FORMAT has real character that goes deeper than just its pretty face.
