Thispaperproposes an agentbaseddistributed powersystemarchitecture. Withthisarchitecture, agentsare usedtorepresent various datasources, condition monitoring and control switch gearsofanelectricity substation. Particularly, a brokeragentasa middle-ware, isdesigned tobridge thegap between auserandadevice inapowersystem. Inaddition, the advantages anddisadvantages oftheimplementation ofabroker agentinthis architecture arediscussed after theexperiments and evaluations using theRemoteProcedure Call(RPC)model. The experiment results indicate whenthenumberofinteractions is large orthelatency ofthenetwork ishigh, abroker agentmethod performs better thanaclient-server method. I.INTRODUCTION A modernsubstation automation systemismadeup ofmanydifferent condition monitoring, real-time control andprotection devices. Remotecontrol iswildly usedin distributed powersystems. A dedicated network isused tocommunicate withthesubstation froma control centre. However, substations areoften disturbed bymanyout-of-order requests andreplies, whichmakeremotely access tothose devices forcontrol andmonitoring relatively complicated. In addition, itisdifficult togather andorganize thedisordered information fromthedifferent devices inpowersystems. However, inabroker based architecture, aspecial agent acts asabroker identifies boththepreferences andcapabilities oftheparticipants, androutesbothrequests andreplies appropriately. A brokeragentas a control mechanism allows userstoremotely control thesubstation plant over a standard IP network. Itdirectly accesses thedevices andgathers information fromthenetwork, instead ofa user. Theproposed systemisdesigned basedontheJava AgentDEvelopment Framework (JADE)(1)platform using Foundation ofIntelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) (2)standard specified agent communication protocols. Inthis paper, abroker agentispresented tosubscribe the target device agents, andremotely interact withthedistributed powersystem devices. A series experiments weredesigned to simulate remotecontrol ofarelay insubstation circumstance,
