A crucial requirement of vz>ual zhteraction is to prevent usersjom performing incorrect operatioas. Thz> reguires the computer environment to trap illegal users ' actions. On the other had users shouldhave enoughfieedom in their interaction, ppicalfi by not bang forced to follow predefined sequences of operation4 yet being able to develop their line of thought in solving their problems. This paper argues that an interactive session can be formhsed as a set of legal visual sentences, i e. a vzsual language spec fled via vixual conditional attributed rewriting sysfems (VCX? Ws), and that thz>formah>atioion allows the specfication of the controlpart of a visual interactive system which traps illegal users' action4 still leaving them jeedom in the order of actions.
