systems usually requires the comparison of one distribution with another; we review a variety of nonparametric analyses for this purpose. We use the term nonparametric to describe analyses that deal with the distributions directly, even though parametric tests such as t-tests may be used in the process. As understanding of the biological system increases, the comparison of the data with a mathematical model allows a quantitative test of the validity of the assumptions embodied in
