Data compression is a technique in which the same amount of data is transmitted by using a smaller number of bits with the help of an algorithm. Different compression algorithms are compared and based on their performance the optimal algorithm is selected. In this paper the different data compression algorithms have been selected and their performance evaluation is done. One of the best and easy algorithms is Huffman's Encoding but the result of evaluation of performance shows that the Huffman's algorithm has some drawbacks, and can be overcome by new algorithm named as Selective Huffman's algorithm. The paper focus on a new technique for compression named as semi-lossless text compression, which states that instead of compressing the whole data if only some portion of the data is compressed the time and space can be saved. The paper also attempted to explore each layer and shows what are different compression techniques can be used in TCP/IP model.
