To realize these services, highly efficient transmission technologies are extremely important. This paper presents the recent trends of HDTV transmission technologies in Japan. The topics include bandwidth compression for analog transmission, bit-rate reduction for digital transmission, and actual transmission experiments using optical fiber lines and communication satellites. It also discusses HDTV transmission in the anticipated B-ISDN.
