Guest Editorial Special Issue on Theory and Application of Filter Banks and Wavelet Transforms

IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing · 1998

HE GROWING interest in filter banks (subband transforms) and wavelets during the last few years has been tremendous. Researchers from a broad range of disciplines are now participating in IEEE Signal Processing Society conferences and workshops to converse on these topics. In response to this trend, we have organized the following Special Issue, which we hope you will find enlightening. Additionally, we are pleased to bring to your attention a “sister” Special Issue entitled Multirate Systems, Filter Banks, Wavelets, and Applications, which will appear in the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS II. Concurrent with growing interest in these fields is the expanding scope of study and application, much of which is reflected in the papers in this volume. Represented among the wide-ranging manuscripts are papers addressing theory, design, methodologies for signal processing, and conventional and emerging applications. Although some of the papers included here focus exclusively on relatively mature areas such as compression, other papers address emerging applications such as wireless and wireline communications. Equally important—and well represented—are theoretical contributions, many addressing methods for design that incorporate time, frequency, orthogonality, and other useful, application-specific constraints. Contrasting convention, there also are papers that consider multi-input/multi-output scenarios, where multiwavelets might have some potential for future applications. The submissions for this Special Issue evidence the Signal Processing Society’s ability to attract the best talent from around the world. We express our sincere thanks to all authors who submitted manuscripts for this Special Issue. Publication constraints forced us to make some tough decisions and prevented us from including many meritorious papers, some of which will be published in subsequent issues of these TRANSACTIONS. Many thanks to our colleagues who
