Modeling and Simulation forRelayProtection

Hong-Shan Zhao · 2006

This paperpresents anewmethodofmodeling and simulation forrelayprotection byusingaDEVS-based toolkit namedCD++.Withthistoolkit, themodeling ofrelaywillbe moreeasyandstraightforward. We takesthedigital threezones distances protection astheexample, studies theapproach ofideal protection relaymodeling, andalsovalidate thevalidity and feasibility ofthemodelthrough analysis. R esearch ofmodeling andsimulation forrelay protection is infavorofnotonlyunderstanding relay's dynamic behavior asdisturbance andfaults happens inpowersystem, butalsoreducing thedevelopment times andcosts ofnew products ofsystem(i). Through modeling andsimulation, we canawarethemechanism andprocess ofcontinuous faults led bybehavior ofrelay during powerblackout inpowersystem (2). Inelectrical powersystem, thetools usedforstudying on modeling andsimulation tothedigital relay protection, such asEMTP,ATP orMATLAB andsoon, aremostly allnot veryconvenient, comprehensible, andespecially more complex regarding thecomplex logical relation modeling approach. So,itisnecessary tostudy a newmethodto improve themodeling ofrelay protection. Theprotection relay appear asthediscrete eventdynamic behavior, thatis, logic dynamic relation, whiletheCD++ toolkit isadaptable to Discrete-Event modeling and simulation(3). Sowepresent athought andsteps ofmodeling andsimulation forrelay protection inCD++. II.BASICKNOWLEDGEOFMODELING FOR RELAY Inpowersystem, relay protection plays important role. Its behavior willaffect thereliability andsafety ofthewhole system. Therefore, itisnecessary toconstruct arelatively accurate andreal modelforrelays. Through analysis, theideal distance relay dynamic behavior maybeabstracted asthree operational modes, namely, normal state (Norm), state after startup component action (StartPost) andstate after operation (OperPost).
