S10a.2 INTELLIGIBILITY MEASUREMENT OF INTERRUPTED VOICE COMHUNICATION SYSTEMS

J.D. Tardelli · 1989

The evaluation of the intelligibility of voice communication systems re uired to operate over severly disturbed transmqssion channels is not possible vith the standard test methods that incorporate issolated words presented at a set rate or pace. With advancements in the quality and intelligibility of narrowband digital voice communications systems has come increased interest in the application of these systems to a wide number of areas. These include applications that require reliable communications over severly disturbed transmission channels. Valid evaluation methods provide a means of demonstratin the effectivness of a system under these ffoatile conditions diagnostic data for improvin systems and a se1;ction criteria. A unique modiffcation to the Dia nostic Rhyme Test method that provides for the evafuation of intelligibility for these systems is presented here. A controlled experiment tests the validity of the modified method vith an experienced crew of DRT listeners. The results of this experiment show that a modification of the DRT for interrupted systems will provide valid measures of intelligibility. Also discussed are the modifications required for scoring an interrupted DRT and the software developed to provide scoring, storage and comparative analysis of the results.
