Review Paper Tuberculosis chemotherapy: An overview in perspective of recent developments

Tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of morbid ity and mortality among human populations. Current TB chemotherapy that takes 6 t o 9 months is difficult to administer and has many side effects. The emergence of new problems like co -infection with HIV, multidrug resistant TB (MDR- TB), extensively drug resistant TB (XDR-TB) and totally drug resistant TB (TDR-TB) have made tuberculosis control even more difficult. Thus, the re is an urgent need for the development of new antituberculosis drugs to effectively combat the me nace of TB in its present manifestation. At present ten molecules are in clinical development for tuberculo sis, among them four are being redeveloped or repurposed for tuberculosis and the remaining six a re new molecules which are explicitly being develop ed for tuberculosis. This review article summarizes an account of the existing chemotherapeutics and highlights the latest information about emerging dr ugs in preclinical and clinical trial studies and t heir mechanism of action.
