(Abstract) In this paper, the transport efficiency of Multi Protocol Encapsulation (MPE), Unidirectional Lightweight Encapsulation (ULE) and Generic Stream Encapsulation (GSE) for typical IP packet sizes is compared. Moreover, the aggregated efficiency when applying packet-level forward error correction (PL-FEC) with MPE, ULE and GSE is also analyzed. MPE-FEC is the mechanism used by DVB-H whereas GSE-FEC is our proposed modification to be used in DVB-S2. A layered efficiency calculation model is presented in order to simplify the computation. The performance of GSE-FEC is also analyzed when adopted by the IP traffic and DiffServ Classes with different modulations and coding rates (ModCods). Theoretical analysis and simulation revealed that GSE-FEC is more efficient than MPE-FEC and ULE-FEC for DVB-S2 networks. Nomenclature
