STATISTICAL TOOLS USED IN CRYPTOGRAPHIC EVALUATION
Adela Georgescu, Ruxandra F. Olimid, Emil Simion · 2011
This paper gives an overview of some statistical tools used in cryptography from ancient times to nowadays. Statistical tests are very useful in the cryptanalysis of pen and paper ciphers, oering a good tool for identication of the enciphering system used in a cryptogram and of the statistical structure of the text, leading to nding the plaintext. NIST statistical tests were used in the evaluation of the AES candidates. Also, linear and dierential cryptanalysis for block ciphers are based on a statistical approach.
