Wavelet packets as the adaptive version of Wavelets have been proved to be a powerful tool for analyzing transients with extended multiresolution[2]. In this paper, we compare the results obtained by short time Fourier Transform with wavelet transform for a set of vibration signal in condition monitoring of electrical equipment. Wavelet packets adapt to nature of transient signals through the best basis algorithm and provide transient representation in a small number of coefficients. In this way, wavelet packets offer an advantage over Fourier Transform for analyzing transients.
