Ethics or Self Interest: An Examination of the Past and Potential Future of Microsoft's Philanthropy in Light of Gates' Succession
Jonah Wagner · 2006
This paper will take a critical look at the nature of Microsoft’s past philanthropic efforts as well as speculating on the future of those efforts as a correlative of the departure of Chief Software Architect Bill Gates. Both the positive and negative sides of Microsoft’s CSR campaign will be addressed. The paper will also caste a wary eye over the potential of Gates’ new Foundation, the effects of the Warren Buffett donation, and the role the Foundation might play in the future of world philanthropic initiatives. While numerous possibilities will be analyzed, this paper will focus more on the less broadly emphasized negative side to Gates’ succession.
