Exposed node is a significant problem that affects any wireless networks by preventing a node from initiating packet transmission to other nodes due to the adjacent transmitter(s). In this paper, we present an analytical model to evaluate missed packet transmission opportunities in the wireless networks, employing Listen-Before-Talk etiquette, due to the exposed node problem. We develop a state dependent model considering the spatial characteristics of the wireless signal propagation and taking into account the path loss with distance and shadowing effect to analyze the performance of such network due to the exposed node problem. It is shown that the presence of exposed nodes barely affects the network performance and imposes the system up to 40% opportunity loss.
