Experimental Applications 0f Hall-Effect Wattmeters at50 Hz

Harold M. Barlow · 1965

Since Halleffect istheresult ofmultiplying together a magnetic andanelectric field, taking intoaccount anyphasediffer- encebetween them, awattmeter employing asemiconductor device ofthis kindisalogical development. Thepaperdescribes three experimental applications intheUnited Kingdom, including single- andthree-phase instruments metering thepowerinput to132kV grid lines andalsoto240volt accables, witharecord oftheir per- formance underpractical operating conditions onCentral Electricity Generating Boardinstallations. Experience showed that using indium arsenide asthesemiconductor element, temperature errors were reduced toaninsignificant level andanoverall accuracy ofabout ±2percent wasreadily obtainable. Itisclaimed thatthistypeof instrument applicable tohigh-voltage lines without theneedfor special current andvoltage transformers ismuchcheaper thanthe conventional dynamometer equipment forthesamepurpose and quite asreliable.
