The design of thermal systems is complicated by changing operating conditions, the large number of alternatives, the strong dependance of thermal properties on temperature and pressure and sometimes the lack of a good understanding of the basic phenomena involved. A conceptual development is presented for organizing multi-objective hierarchical thermal design problems into a series of decision support problems which are compatible and solvable with DSIDES, a software system that is under development in the Systems Design Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston. The software is currently being used to support the design of a variety of mechanical design problems including ships and airplanes. In this paper, a hierarchical coupled thermal problem is presented and solved by way of example.
