Thepaperreportsthedevelopment ofmodel-based sensorless control methlodologies fordriving PMSMs using matrix converters.Inparticular, experimental results showthatobserver-based state-estimation techniques nor-mally employed forsensorless conltrol ofPMSMsusing Voltage Source Inlverters (VSIs) [1,2], can bereadily exportedtomatrix converter counteTparts witiminimal additional computational overhead. Furithermore, zerospeed stft-up andspeed r-eversal areexperimenltally demonstrated. Finally, theobserver isdesigned tobefauLlt toler-ant suchthat upon detection ofabroken terminal (phase fault), the PMSM remains operational andcould beutilized toprovide alimp-lhome capability.
