rtificial Intelligence (AI) is a blanket term that covers a whole panoply of technologies. Artificial intelligence, though, is generally considered to be concerned with applying computers to tasks that require knowledge, perception, reasoning, understanding, and cognitive abilities. Artificial intelligence may also be regarded as technology concerned with creating machine intelligence able to perform tasks heretofore only performed by human beings. There are three main areas in engineering (see Table 1) where AI has been applied: expert systems; natural languages (speech recognition); and robotics, including vision and locomotion. These areas mirror human abilities as illustrated in Figure 1.
