This paperpresents newlydeveloped highly efricient H.264codec technologies forhighdefinition consumer products. An essential setofH.264coding tools hasbeendetermined asa result ofan imageevaluation. In addition, a new binary arithmetic decoding algorithm wasdeveloped inorder toachieve necessary performance ontheminimal sufficient clock frequency. Thesealgorithms wereimplemented inournewH.264/AVC high definition codec LSItargeting mobile digital appliances including anHD camcorder. I.INTRODUCTION As highdefinition television (HDTV)spreads among consumers, thedemandforhighpicture quality isincreasing. On theother hand, thecapacity ofstorage mediaorthe network bandwidth islimited inmostcases especially for consumer products. Therefore, itisbecoming morecommon touseH.264(1)asa compression technology instead of conventional MPEG-2 (2)because ofitshighcoding efficiency. Handling ofH.264bitstream isgenerally very complex andrequires highprocessing ability. Thusitisvery important forconsumer products toachieve highperformance, real-time processing, andlowpowerconsumption atthesame timewhile maintaining high picture quality. We developed newtechnologies tomeetthese conflicting demandsbycarefully selecting H.264coding tools and reviewing theprocessing methodofcontext-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC). These technologies wereactually implemented inourH.264/AVC HD codecLSItargeting mobile digital appliances including acamcorder.
