A survey wasmadeofoptical character reader (OCR)users whoreadnumeric handprint (NHP)fromforms written bythegeneral public (uncontrolled environment). Anexperi- mentwasalso doneonNHP reject/substitut ion rates andthetypes oferrors which could beexpected fromwriters inanuncontrolled population. Forthis experiment andtheusers surveyed, OCRdigit reject rates varied from1to7.2percent while digit substitution rates varied from0.7to1.8percent overall.
