Thisstudy focuses onthedevelopment ofavision- basedtreadmill system thatisactuated byapermanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM).ThePMSM employed inour design isfree ofcommutation spikes andmaintenance, sothatit canreplace theDC motorthatisoftenadoptedinthe conventional treadmill system. Moreover, toachieve asmooth lowspeedoperation, thesinusoidal BackEMF andtheSPWM areexploited toachieve sinusoidal commutation forthePMSM. Inaddition, twokindsofrunning modes active andpassive, aredeveloped inthispaper. Intheactive running mode, the running speedofthetreadmill issetupbytheuserthrough a human-machine interface, whileinthepassive running mode theusercandetermine themagnitude oftheretard force and running speedbyhimself/herself. To builda userfriendly environment, a virtual touchpanelisprojected ontoa screen/wall through a projector, anda vision-based motion detection algorithm isusedtodetermine whichbutton ofthe virtual touchpanel ispressed bytheuser. Inthis way, without actually touching thepanel, theusercanoperate thetreadmill whilerunning/jogging, so thatgreatly enhancing the convenience.
