F5-Technical Session I:Wireless andWireline Converrence TheUtility ofCompoundWireless Services 1

Thewireless telecommunications industry isundergoing averitable roller coaster ride. Theboom years ofthe1990's gavewaytobust years. Currently, aplateau oflittle change isbeing experienced. Although hopeexists foranother stratospheric ascent, themuchheralded investment inadata infrastructure hasnothadmuchofaninfluence. Staid voice communications still remains theonly killer application, leading toexcess communications capacity andlittle capital return fromthedata infrastructure investment. Thistalk will provide examples within adata services class that havethepotential ofsubstantial capital returns. Thisclass ofdata services istermed Compound Wireless (Mobile Communication) Services or CWS's. Compound Wireless Services arebeyond 3Gandarenotnowavailable. Noraretheyplanned for 3Gwireless systems. However, they represent anatural extension beyond 3Gandprovide anincentive for users/subscribers todesire 3Gdata services. Itisbelieved that Compound Wireless Services will makethe wireless telecommunications terminal anindispensable data tool andwill subjugate voice communications toasecondary service. Thatis, theCWSclass will contain manykiller application services. ACompound Wireless Service isaservice consisting oflinked component services. Wheninvoked, aCWS will cause thecomponent services tobeexecuted inasequence prescribed bytheCWS.Thefollowing CWS example isintended toassist indefining this class ofservices. Consider having asevere time constraint fordriving avehicle between twogeographic points. Thismayapply tocommuting between one's homeandaplace ofemployment, orforalimousine driver toarrive atanairport intimefora passenger's flight, orforachartered bustoreach its tour destination inatimely manner, etc. Themainthree component services employed toachieve this needare: 1.Location service -todetermine thepresent location ofawireless terminal inthevehicle. 2. Travel route computation -tocompute theleast timeconsuming drive between thecurrent wireless terminal location andadesignated destination (e.g., airport). 3. Traffic information retrieval -tointerrogate traffic information systems available fromstate police and other sources fortheregions ofthetravel route. Theuser/subscriber programmed wireless service consists ofcontinual iterations ofthese three services until thedestination isreached. Theiteration sequence canconsist ofthefollowing steps:
